P.E. and sport

PE and sport are both highly valued at Bickley Primary School. Physical activity not only improves health, reduces stress and enhances concentration but it also has a positive influence on academic achievement, emotional stability and interaction with others. Our PE curriculum teaches our children that PE and sport are an important part of a healthy, active lifestyle as well as being a great way to have fun and make new friends.

All of our children receive two hours of high-quality PE every week. Throughout the year, our children take part in games, dance, gymnastics and outdoor and adventurous activities. Swimming is also taught in Year 4 and 6.

All children have the opportunity to represent their house team (Diamonds, Rubies or Sapphires) in our inter-house competitions. As the children move through the school, they also have the opportunity to represent Bickley Primary School in one of our many successful sports teams. We compete in the Bromley School Games tournaments and other inter-school competitions in a range of sports including football, tag rugby, netball, basketball, athletics and boccia. The team’s successes are shared and celebrated in assemblies, on the school sports display and through our Twitter account

The school year always ends with our Sports Week where several specialist coaches from local clubs come in to run activity sessions for the children. Sports on offer include tennis, korfball, boxing, table tennis and hockey. This enrichment week is something that the children really look forward to and inspires them to take part in more sport outside of school.

During lunchtimes the playground is split into activity zones to allow the children to take part in a range of physical activities including skipping, football, basketball and activities run by our Year 6 Play Leaders.

Along with the large variety of physical activity within the curriculum, we also offer a range of extra-curricular clubs including netball, tag rugby, football, martial arts, gymnastics, lacrosse and cycling. Teachers run some of these clubs whilst others are run by specialist coaches from local sports clubs.

For the past two years, Bickley Primary School has been awarded the Sainsbury’s School Games Gold award for its commitment to offering opportunities for children to be physically active and for its development of competition across the school and into the community.
