PE and Sport are both highly valued at Bickley Primary School. Our children are taught that PE and sport are an important part of a healthy, active lifestyle. They know how PE and sport contribute to a balanced, healthy, active lifestyle and how different activities affect their fitness, health and feelings about themselves.

All of our children receive two hours of high-quality PE every week. The majority of lessons are taught by their class teacher, but throughout the year the children also have lessons taught by specialist sports teachers. Throughout the year children will take part in games, dance, gymnastics and outdoor and adventurous activities. Swimming is also taught in Year 4 and 6.

As the children move through the school they have the opportunity to represent Bickley Primary School in one of our many successful sports teams. We compete in the School Games tournaments and other inter-school competitions in the following sports:

  • Football
  • Tag Rugby
  • Netball
  • Basketball
  • Boccia
  • Tri-Golf
  • Athletics
  • Cross Country
  • Rounders
  • Cricket
  • Cycling
  • Boxing and fitness

The team’s successes are shared and celebrated in assemblies, on the school sports display and through our sports newsletters.

The children in Key Stage 2 also take part in inter-house competitions throughout the year. These competitions take place at the end of a unit of lessons and offer the children the chance to practice the skills they have learnt in a competitive situation. Competition is also built into lessons for Key Stage One children.

The school year always ends with our Sports Week where several specialist coaches from local clubs come in to run activity sessions for the children. Sports on offer include tennis, korfball, boxing, table tennis and hockey. This enrichment week is something that the children really look forward to and inspires them to take part in more sport outside of school.

During lunchtimes the playground is split into activity zones to allow the children to take part in a range of physical activities including skipping, football, basketball and the ‘Craze of the Week’. Year 6 also offer a variety of activities in their role as Play Leaders.

There are an incredible range of sports clubs on offer at the school including Judo, Jujitsu, football, tag rugby, gymnastics and boxing. Teachers run some of these clubs whilst others are run by specialist coaches from local sports clubs. The children have further opportunities to take part in sport during our Reward Time on Fridays.

Bickley Primary School has been awarded the Sainsbury’s School Games Silver award for its commitment to offering opportunities for children to be physically active and for its development of competition across the school and into the community.
